Rajawali Book - Israel attacks a new country again. Not Gaza, Lebanon or Iran but Syria.

This made the Syrian government furious. Through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Syria condemned the latest attack by saying that Tel Aviv's attack was aimed at an area filled with civilians.

Damascus said the attack was criminal. Syria also urged UN members to take swift action to punish Israel.

"The Syrian Arab Republic condemns the aggression launched by the Zionist entity," the ministry said in a statement quoted by Al Jazeera, Tuesday (11/5/2024).

"Syria calls on the member states of the United Nations to take immediate action and firm steps to stop the Israeli aggression and hold the perpetrators accountable for their crimes," he added.

According to reports, Israeli fighter jets launched three attacks on the Sayyidah Zaynab area, located about 10km (6 miles) south of Damascus. The first attack hit the Kaou Sudan crossing near Sayyidah Zaynab, which was filled with displaced people fleeing Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

The second strike was near a hotel, located southeast of Sayyidah Zaynab. The third targeted farmhouses in the area.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said two of the dead were from Lebanon's Hezbollah movement. Five others were seriously injured in the Israeli airstrikes, although it did not say whether they were civilians or a specific group.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Air Force claimed early Tuesday that it had struck "targets" at Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters in "Syrian territory", an unusual admission by Tel Aviv.

"Hezbollah's intelligence headquarters operates a branch in Syria, which includes collection and assessment systems," the Israeli Air Force said in a social media post.

"The strikes on military intelligence headquarters assets in Syria join the strikes in Lebanon in undermining the intelligence capabilities of the terrorist organization Hezbollah," it said.

Sayyidah Zaynab, which is considered the site of an important Shiite holy site, has been targeted by Israel in recent times. The source said the site remains at the top of Israel's target list due to its location as a refuge for Hezbollah members fleeing to Syria.

Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks on targets in Syria over the years, most without acknowledging responsibility. Tel Aviv has also intensified the attacks since the outbreak of war between the Zionist state and the Palestinian Gaza militia, Hamas, on October 7, 2023.
